Challenge

Before working with Coridian, this major medical laboratory was printing and hand applying labels to hundreds of vials a day. The company needed a more efficient and less time consuming way to print labels and apply them to vials.

Solution

Coridian partnered with WS Packaging’s automation division and developed an automatic print and apply printer. The machine holds a hopper full of blank vials. When a request is sent through their software the machine releases the vials. When the vials come down, the label is printed and is automatically applied to the vial and is ready for the end user.

Coridian also helped the company determine the best label to use. They needed a label that fit the vial correctly and one that could be exposed to different laboratory testing environments.

Results

By using this automatic print and apply solution it takes out the potential error of applying the wrong label to the vial. It also takes out the labor of applying the labels. The lab gets a patient sample in and then they’re able to scan in the patient information and automatically get the correct vials, correctly labeled for the aliquot process. Managing hundreds of samples a day, the new technology reduces errors and speeds up the process.
