Hardware and Custom Application Modernize Manufacturing
Challenge
A leader in manufacturing highly specialized, formed and stamped
metal approached Coridian for a solution to problems tracking
production and Quality Control (QC) inspection reporting. Before
contacting Coridian, this manufacturer had been tracking and
recording order progress and inspection results using pen and paper,
then filing them away for later reference; A method unchanged since
they opened in the 1970s. Hundreds of man-hours were lost annually,
simply searching for past records or providing order status updates to
current customers.
Solution
Coridian met with the manufacturer’s Production and Engineering
departments to gain a full understanding of their challenges,
current processes, and unique needs. Starting with a blank slate
allowed Coridian to design a truly full solution that eliminated the
need to hand-write information at any stage of the manufacturing
and inspection processes. Coridian wrote a custom application to
function as a central hub for data tracking and storage. The
application succeeds as a stand-alone program but also ties
seamlessly into their existing ERP software. Additionally, 8 (soon to
be 16) workstations were outfitted with Zebra Technologies’ Xplore
Rugged Tablets with tethered scanners, allowing workers to simply
scan a barcode and relay data directly to the custom application. The
Xplore tablets were chosen for their durability, large screens with
quality displays, and workers’ ability to wear gloves while using them.
Results
The result is a company in full control of their manufacturing
and QC processes through complete automation of tracking
and reporting. Hundreds of previously lost man-hours have
been saved by storing data in the custom application rather
than in paper files. This manufacturer is now able to instantly
recall historical data and provide real-time order status
updates to customers at the push of a button—improving
customer service and setting up their company for long-term
success.
