Shipping Validation for Medical Devices
Challenge
This major medical device company, headquartered in Minnesota,
develops medical technology and services that help put more control
into the hands of those who treat cardiac, neurological and chronic
pain patients worldwide. When the company came looking for a
solution to help them improve the process of shipping validation,
Coridian helped ensure their goal of more control and less risk.
Coridian met with the director of the company’s Continuous
Improvement department to better understand their business
processes and the challenges they were facing. Coridian learned that
the system that tracked pouches containing pre-sterilized medical
devices had no traceability, and was inconsistent, leading to packing
and shipping errors. It is imperative to have a complete and accurate
record of all items shipped for traceability in case of a recall.
Solution
After completing a thorough needs assessment, Coridian’s
application group drew upon years of experience to design an
application that captures information from the medical company’s
work orders, pouch, box labels and employee badge and makes
certain all data corresponds, including batch, part number, and
use-before dates. A daily global error log is now in place that displays
transaction codes generated from all workstations and alerts when a
part, material or lot number does not match the initial value.
Results
Coridian designed a solution that improved the company’s
productivity and data accuracy, and fit the client’s needs and
budget. This implementation resulted in major
improvements in the quality and compliance of their
packaging. The semi-automated process is now able to catch
any mistakes and better process returns.
